At this year’s Women in Insurance and Financial Services (WIFS) National Conference, I had the privilege of speaking about one of my favorite topics –what really happens when people retire. Spoiler alert: it’s not just about the money. According to the Financial Planning Association’s 2025 Retirement Trends Report, more than half of advisors say their clients are financially prepared for retirement, but only 11% believe they’re emotionally ready.
In my session, we explored the non-financial side of retirement – how shifts in identity, purpose, and daily structure can catch even the most successful professionals off guard. We also discussed how financial advisors can deepen client relationships by asking questions that go beyond the portfolio. I shared a toolkit with a list of questions that advisors can use to explore this topic with their clients. We also practiced using a Life Transition Wheel, which helps people assess satisfaction across different areas of life and identify where they may need to let go, realign, or refocus.
For individuals, this approach involves taking time to reflect and create a plan for a fulfilling next chapter. It won’t just happen on it’s own. And it’s also important to separate the idea of reaching “retirement age” and assuming you have to quit working. That’s not the right move for everyone. If work is still engaging, it may look different than before, but still play a big part in your life.
For financial advisors, it’s an opportunity to serve clients more holistically and attract those who appreciate a more relational approach. Having deep conversations can lead to becoming their primary trusted advisor.
If you’d like to explore a private client workshop, presentation, or one-on-one coaching conversation, I’d love to connect. Together, we can help your clients (or you) prepare not just financially, but emotionally, for what’s next.
